Nike is always up to something, and this one is just another notch on the belt. Their “Home Turf” series debuted last month, and this is just one pair of many in the collection. The term “lifestyle trainers” sounded like an oxymoron to many European at the time. Yet, Nike forged ahead in 1987 and brought the very first Air Max onto the shores of the Old World. While at first deemed by locals as an impossible feat, a following quickly grew in cities like London, Milan, and Paris. A decade after, the Nike Air Max and all of its variations enmeshed themselves onto local subcultures, much like how Air Force 1 became part of streetballers’ ensembles here in the U.S.
To highlight the symbiotic relationship between the three cities and the Nike Air Max family, Nike Sportswear created the “Home Turf” Collection. A total of 12 designs, with each pack of four linking to each city. For London, it is the contrast between modernity and traditions with Nike Air Max 1 Hyperfuse, the Nike Air Max 90 Hyperfuse, the Nike Air Max 1 2013 and the Nike Air Max 95. For the city of Milan, it is able the luxe life and premium craftsmanship with Air Max 97 2013, the Air Max 1, Air Max 97 and Air Max 90. Finally, for Paris, the City of Light, it is about timeless classics and the familiar naval-inspired stripes with Air Max Classic BW, Air Max 90, Air Max 2013 and Air Max 1 Hyperfuse.
The European love affair will start this Friday February 15th, with limited availability at select Nike Sportswear retailers. A general release will take place next month on March 27th.
