Album Review: Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City”
Not going to make the review too long, this album is obviously a masterpiece. Even with it leaking several days before the actual release date (yesterday), the album is projected to do 200,000 in sales the first week, for obvious reason. When expected to “revive hip-hop” it’s a must to come with your best and Kendrick Lamar did not disappoint.
Personally my favorite track is “M.A.A.D. City”. With its intense intro you automatically expect something great and then when the beat drops it’s absolutely mind blowing. (“If Pirus and Crips, all got along…” )The most impressive thing about Kendrick Lamar is how he can switch up his voice, cadence, patterns, and anything else that goes into putting together a great rap song. There are a lot of rappers out there that tend to sound the same as the next guy, but if you tried to flow like K. Dot, it just wouldn’t sound right. It’s nice to finally have a unique voice in rap that doesn’t just talk about getting money, f*ckin hoes, and driving the nicest cars. A lot of notable hip-hop journalists have compared Kendrick’s story telling style to legendary rappers like 2 Pac, Biggie, Jay-Z, and many others.
Throughout the entire album you actually get to hear the story of Kendrick Lamar growing up in the streets of Compton. There is also a lot of talking in between the songs too, which actually adds to the story telling aspect of the album painting a very vivid picture of how Kendrick Lamar grew up. Dr. Dre being on the album twice is also a very good addition. It’s not often that we get to hear the doctor spit, so him gracing these tracks just goes to show that Kendrick Lamar must be one of the best. “Poetic Justice” featuring Drake seems to be a favorite with the ladies, which is also another major feature on the album.
Overall there weren’t that many features on the album, something we don’t see a lot these days. It seems like rappers pack their albums with features just to get more buzz with other names on there, but not K. Dot. It truly shows how talented an emcee is when they can put together an entire album with limited features displaying their individual talent. This kind of compares to Eminem and how he doesn’t have too many other people on his albums, just him goin in with no help from big names.
“Swimming Pools” is obviously a stand out track on the album since it was the main single released, but it seems like every single track is a masterpiece. I can truly say that there isn’t one bad song on the album. Every track paints the perfect picture in all different aspects. Whether it’s talking about drinking, partying, surviving, seeing girls, robberies, or any other category, Kendrick Lamar made sure we could picture what he was saying exactly. I could go on and on about each track, but why waste your time? Get the album, this isn’t a plug or anything, this is just truly one of the best hip-hop albums you could buy this year. It’s good to see that the album’s numbers are projected do so well because hip-hop really needs this. At a time when most songs are just about cliche “rap” topics like money and girls, this is just what we need. A full length album actually telling stories about real life situations in the most creative way possible. Is it too much to give this album a 10 out 10? Because it really seems like that’s what it deserves. Get the album HERE.
