Two nights ago at the VMA’s Tyler the Creator was awarded “Best New Artist”, I have no idea why when Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean were in the same category. Honestly Wiz has made way more noise than The Odd Future leader and sold way more albums, not everyone likes Odd Future…but most people will bump a Wiz song no matter what. Big Sean had a huge year too, something is up with MTV and their decision politics when it comes to these awards.
Not only did I have a problem with his win, but more importantly GLAAD didn’t appreciate Tyler The Creator’s victory at all. Here’s the official statement GLAAD put out today.
“Rather than providing simply a larger platform, MTV and other networks should educate viewers about why anti-gay and misogynistic language has no place in the music industry today,” said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. “Given Tyler’s history of such remarks, viewers and potential sponsors should refrain from honoring homophobia and in the future look to a more deserving artist.”
